While the trefoil is a styilized geometric representation of the three leafed shamrock or clover, the quadrafoil is a styilized geometric representation of the four leafed shamrock. The Celtic religion placed mystical meaning on many numbers: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 13 were especially significant.
